What’s In A Fragrance Oil?

What’s In A Fragrance Oil?

For candle and soap makers, fragrance oils are indispensable companions.  In this quick guide, we break down the basic things you need to learn about fragrance oil.

Uses of fragrance oil

Aside from soap and candle-making, fragrance oil can be used for perfumery, aromatherapy, cleaning products and reed diffusers.  Fragrance oils are also utilized in industrial settings such as odor control, enhancing product appeal, or masking undesirable smells in manufacturing processes.

What does “flash point” mean in a fragrance oil?

Fragrance oils are volatile and they evaporate. A "flash point" is the temperature point where the oil can ignite when exposed to an open flame. It also indicates how quickly or slowly a fragrance oil evaporates. When you have a candle-making business, it is crucial to understand the flashpoint of your fragrance oil. A rule of thumb is that an oil with a high flash point is more ideal because it is less likely to catch fire at lower temperatures.

Fragrance oil composition

Fragrance oil is a combination of essential oils, aroma chemicals, solvents and diluents. The distinctive scents from essential oils are concentrated aroma compounds derived from plants. Essential oils are the only way to create all-natural candles. It is almost impossible to achieve a different range of fragrance oils using pure essential oils alone. This is why some oils are created from synthetic aroma chemicals.

The solvents and diluents in a fragrance oil composition balance out the oils. Solvents dissolve the essence while diluents thin them out. Both make it easier to adjust the scents and achieve the desired aroma.

Solvents help dissolve concentrated aroma compounds, making them blend better and last longer. Diluents adjust the thickness of the oil, ensuring it spreads evenly and burns consistently when mixed with wax.

Safety and hazard when using fragrance oil

While we’ve created our fragrance oils to the highest safety standard, it is important to handle them with utmost care.  Potential allergic reactions or skin sensitivities due to the ingredients are a top consideration.
