Candle-making Frequently Asked Questions

I’m new to candle-making. What does the flashpoint in a fragrance oil mean?

In candle-making, the flashpoint of a fragrance oil is the temperature at which the oil can vaporize to form an ignitable mixture in air. It indicates the temperature at which the oil becomes a hazard. Adding your fragrance oil at the correct temperature ensures the scent is evenly distributed without losing its potency. Your fragrance oil should be stored below its flash point to avoid ignition and degradation of the oil's quality.

When do I add fragrance oil to my wax?

It is important to add your fragrance oil at the correct temperature. This ensures the fragrance binds with the wax and is even distributed throughout. Melt the wax according to the manufacturer's instructions and once the wax is melted, let it slightly cool down and stir in your fragrance oil. The optimal temperature to add fragrance oil is usually between 180-185°F (82-85°C) for most waxes, but this can vary. Examples are as follows: soy wax:  170-180°F (77-82°C), paraffin wax: 180-185°F (82-85°C), and, beeswax: 155-165°F (68-74°C). Continue stirring for 3 minutes to ensure the fragrance is fully incorporated and bound to the wax.

How to do a burn-test for my candles?

To perform a burn test, trim the wick to ¼ inch, light the candle, and let it burn for 3-4 hours to ensure the melt pool reaches the container edges. Observe the flame height, soot, and fragrance throw, aiming for a steady flame, minimal soot, and a strong scent. Extinguish the candle, let it cool, and repeat as necessary, making adjustments to the wick size or candle formulation based on your observations for optimal performance. For more information, read A Candle-Maker's Guide to Burn Testing.

Which wax type works with liquid dye?

Liquid dyes work well with most wax types like soy, coconut, gel, paraffin, or other natural waxes.

Can I blend / mix multiple fragrance oil?

Yes, you can blend multiple fragrance oils to create unique and custom candle scents. We highly encourage experimentation. Start simple with 2 or 3 fragrance before moving with more complex combinations. Choose complimenting scent profile. For instance, citrus blends well with floral or herbal scents, and vanilla often pairs nicely with almost anything. How much fragrance oil do I use for my soaps?

The amount of fragrance oil to use with your soap will be base on your personal preferences and base use. Always check the manufacturer's recommended ration. Before committing to a large batch, test your fragrance in a small amount of soap to ensure it behaves well and has the desired scent strength. Consider the scent throw. Some fragrances may lose strength over time or react differently in the soap-making process. Let your soap cure fully to get a better idea of the final scent.
