In this guide, you'll learn how to make your own soy candles! This will show you the entire process from start to finish. We use soy wax often because it offers a long burn time and cleans up easily with just hot water and soap.
Making scented candles will require the following:
- A double boiler
- Spatula
- Paper towels
- Rubbing alcohol
- Scissors
Step by step directions:
When making candles, you'll need access to a flat surface like a tabletop for several hours as they cool down.
Step 1: Melt the wax
Pour 1 lb of soy wax into the double boiler, then heat.
Step 2: Prep candle jars
While the wax melts, clean the candle jars with the rubbing alcohol and paper towels. This prevents any issues with wicking or debris.
Center and attach a wick to each jar with a sticker.
Step 3: Add candle dye and fragrance oil to wax
If dying, add half of a dye block to the wax and stir once fully melted.
Once the dye is fully incorporated, check the wax temperature using a thermometer. When the wax reaches 185°F (or 85°C), turn off the heat, and add the fragrance oil. Pour in 1 oz (28 g) bottle of fragrance oil of your choice, roughly a 7% fragrance load. Carefully stir for 2 minutes to ensure that the oil is completely mixed with the wax.
Step 4: Pour wax into candle jars
When the wax cools to 135°F (57.2°C), pour the wax into the jars. To keep the wicks straight, use a wick bar.
Let the wax cool undisturbed at room temperature until fully set.
Step 5: Trim & enjoy!
When the candles are set, remove the wick bars and trim the wicks to 1/4 in. (6 mm).
That's it! Making soy candles is that easy!
